New Senate Bill Proposes Increasing Public School Accessibility

On Tuesday, April 11, the Oregon Senate approved Senate Bill 409, which seeks to open the state’s educational curriculum to more scrutiny. To provide parents with access to statewide-approved resources, schools must do so under Senate Bill 409.

It does not mandate that schools provide access to the district’s curriculum and resources. Sen. Kim Thatcher (R-Keizer) included a similar provision in the legislation she cosponsored.

Thatcher said, “It is incomplete.” “It is not what I wanted, but it is a start and the reason I say that is that school districts can still choose a curriculum other than what is approved by the Oregon Department of Education, which may or may not be a good thing, but that is what parents need to know is what’s happening in their kid’s school and their school district.”

Thatcher has expressed her desire for school districts to be more forthcoming about their curricular choices should this measure become law.

“With everything being online now, why can’t we get access at least to the information, and why does it seem to be kept a secret, which does make people trust whoever’s keeping it secret a little bit less?” Thatcher raised doubts-

‘This at least starts the ball rolling towards transparency in that respect. I think there’s more we can do, and I would still like to work on it, but this is definitely a step in the right direction.’

The Oregon Senate has passed Senate Bill 409, which will now be considered by the Oregon House.
