An Atmospheric River May Flood Oregon Until Monday

On Sunday(April 9, 2023) night into Tuesday(April 11, 2023), the National Weather Service predicts rain throughout western Oregon, which will cause streams and rivers to rise and maybe generate some minor flooding. The Willamette Valley might see up to 2 inches, while the Coast Range could see up to 3 inches.

“The primary concerns are along some creeks and rivers draining the Coast Range and Willapa Hills, along with creeks and smaller rivers in the Willamette Valley,” according to NWS Portland. Minor flooding is possible along the Grays River in Rosburg, the Wilson River in Tillamook, the Tualatin River in Dilley, and the Luckiamute River in Suver.

“Periods of moderate to heavy rain will also pose a hazard to motorists at times Sunday through Monday, especially in low-lying areas where water can easily pool and significantly increase the risk of hydroplaning. Consider adding a little extra time to your commute in case you need to slow down,” NWS said.

The Nehalem River at Foss, the Trask River above Cedar Creek, and Johnson Creek at Sycamore all have a 5-10% probability of mild flooding.

“These probabilities account for both hydrological and meteorological uncertainty. Overall, widespread river flooding is not expected with this event, but the chance of minor flooding is just high enough to warrant messaging,” NWS added.
