Overdose Crisis: Portland Police Respond to 11 Reports in a Single Day

In just over 12 hours on Friday, 31 March 2023, police were called to 11 overdoses in downtown Portland.

The Portland Police Bureau says that between 10:29 a.m. and 11:08 p.m., three people died of what seemed to be an overdose. In one of these three cases, police tried to save the life of a 25-year-old woman by giving her the drug Narcan, which reverses the effects of an overdose.

Officers say they also used Narcan on Friday to help five other people who had overdosed.

Other than the times and places, they didn’t say anything about the other three reports of overdoses.

According to a press release from the police department, all overdoses were caused by opioids, and most were likely caused by fentanyl.

The deaths will be looked into by the Multnomah County Medical Examiner’s Office. The Narcotics and Organized Crime Unit of the Portland Police Bureau may follow up on any leads that lead to drug dealers. This could lead to criminal charges.

Police say that people in the community often notice signs of an overdose and call 911 to report it. They say that these calls save lives and that, under Oregon law, people who call for emergency medical help won’t be charged with drug crimes.
