The sport’s school roots go back to the 1800s. After all, James Naismith developed basketball to get kids to exercise. Soon after, the idea of a high school basketball state championship came up. As early as 1908, Illinois already had a state championship. Indiana had its first high school basketball championship in 1911, and Wisconsin was among the first states to have them (1916).
Now, the sport is part of the American high school culture. According to data from the 2021-22 school year collected by the National Federation of State High School Associations, more than half a million boys play on their high school basketball team.
This number means more than 18,000 teams are playing in all 50 states. They play games in high school gyms on dark winter nights.
But when teams don’t play each other, how do you tell which ones are the best? Since sports are based on data, there are many ways to rate and rank basketball teams.
Stacker used MaxPreps to rank boys’ high school basketball in Oregon. MaxPreps’ rankings take into account a team’s record of wins and losses, the quality of its wins, and the difficulty of its schedule. Read on to find out which Oregon schools are the best for boys’ basketball.
