The county seat of Washington County is located in Hillsboro, making it the fifth-largest city in Oregon. In the 1870s, the area was connected to the railroad network, and another 40 years later, an interurban electric railway was built.
The city’s population increased gradually from approximately 2,000 in 1910 to about 5,000 in 1950 before the entry of high-tech firms in the 1980s, with the help of these trains and motorways.
Hillsboro is governed by a mayor who presides over a council and a city manager who oversees the city’s day-to-day operations. Also, Hillsboro launched Oregon’s first advanced manufacturing apprenticeship for high school students.
Hillsboro’s high-tech industry is just one part of the city’s thriving economy, including the medical field, retail trade, and agriculture (particularly grapes and wineries). The city maintains over twenty parks and the multi-purpose Hillsboro Stadium, and the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) recognizes eleven locations within the municipal limits.
