Gresham Company Recalls Frozen Strawberries After Hep a Link

A company in Gresham, Oregon, recalls frozen “Organic Strawberries” sold at Costco, Aldi, KeHE, Vital Choice Seafood, PCC Community Markets and Trader Joe’s because they may be linked to an outbreak of hepatitis A.

Scenic Fruit Company, based in Gresham, announced the recall after five people in Washington got hepatitis A from an outbreak between November 11 and December 27 last year.

So far, no hepatitis A cases in Oregon have been linked to these products, but the Oregon Health Authority is keeping an eye on the situation.

β€œSince these products were available in Oregon stores, we want to let people know about them so they can take steps to protect themselves and their families,” said Ann Thomas, a public health physician with the OHA.

β€œAt this point, OHA is carefully investigating any new cases of hepatitis A virus to determine if they are associated with the outbreak, but we have not yet been able to link any Oregon cases to these products.”

The affected product is no longer being made or sold by Scenic Fruit Company, while the U.S. Food and Drug Administration looks into what went wrong.

β€œThe company is voluntarily recalling the affected products and cooperating with the FDA,” said Karel Smit, Oregon Department of Agriculture food safety program manager.

β€œThe purpose of the recall is to remove the products from commerce and prevent the public from consuming potentially affected products.”

People are asked to stop eating Simply Nature, Vital Choice, Kirkland Signature, Made With, PCC Community Markets, and Trader Joe’s brands with organic strawberries. Officials say the product should be returned for a full refund or thrown away.

OR Health Authority shared a tweet regarding this news-

Thomas said, “Anyone who thinks they got sick after eating frozen strawberries from Costco or Trader Joe’s should talk to a doctor.”

Hepatitis A causes jaundice, which is a yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes, fatigue, stomach pain, loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, dark urine, and bowel movements that are light in color.
