Portland firefighters rescued two dogs within the last week after each fell into deep holes.
Portland Fire & Rescue was called to a home in North Portland where a 13-year-old dog had fallen 10 feet into a sinkhole in the backyard, On Saturday night, March 11, 2023.
Portland Fire & Rescue says Crews could hook up a complicated rope system to the dog’s harness and safely pull the more than 80-pound dog. The dog did not get hurt when it fell, the firefighters said.
The following Friday morning, March 17, 2023, a 14-year-old black Labrador that had fallen into a maintenance hole in Southeast Portland was saved by firefighters.

According to fire officials, they rescued a 14-year-old lab named Tess this morning at SE 9th and Lambert. Environmental services had removed a manhole cover to inspect storm drains, and the unsuspecting pup fell 23’ to the bottom.
Crews at the scene lowered a firefighter to harness the dog and lift them back to safety.
Firefighters say the Labrador wasn’t hurt by the fall and returned home after being rescued.
