Lifting Of Secure Hold At All Oregon Schools

Friday, March 11, 2023, afternoon, school officials in Oregon put all schools on lockdown after a receptionist at a high school reported receiving a call containing a threat of violence towards the high school. This incident has now been determined to be a “swatting.”

A letter from Oregon School District Administrator Leslie Bergstrom to parents was sent out at roughly 2:35 p.m., reassuring them that their children were secure and that the Oregon Police Department had requested the Secure Hold status out of an abundance of caution.

This classification requires all students and employees to remain within the building. The superintendent reported that the lockdown had been lifted for all schools except the high school at 3:20 p.m. At about 3:55 p.m., the high school’s lockdown was removed, and everyone inside could finally go home.

According to Bergstrom, the police and FBI have concluded that the call originated from outside the United States and was likely an instance of “swatting,” a word for hoax calls concerning actual or purportedly real threats meant to provoke a widespread police response.

β€œThe safety and well-being of our students and staff is always our top priority,” Bergstrom said. β€œWe take any reports of potential threats seriously and are making every effort to maintain an environment where students and staff feel safe. We are proud of our staff and students for following our safety protocols.”

Thirdly, Bergstrom said that the buses would depart in about 30 minutes. The school administration thanked law enforcement for their investigation and the families for their understanding and patience.

Last year, swatting incidents occurred at schools in cities like Baraboo and Janesville, among many others across the United States.
