Oregon Will Provide Emergency Snap Payments Worth $71 Million In January

Emergency Snap Payments: Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients in Oregon will get their January emergency food allotments on or around the 15th.

Since March 2020, the federal government has monthly granted emergency allotments. This provides supplemental aid to those on SNAP during the current COVID-19 pandemic. Oregon is able to grant these short-term benefits due to the federal COVID-19 public health emergency.

This emergency aid was granted by the federal government for January, so Oregon will be able to issue it in February of 2023 as well. Emergency aid, however, is only temporary and will terminate once the federal public health emergency has been declared over.

In addition to their usual SNAP payments, over 421,000 households will get about $71 million in food assistance in the month of January.

Oregon Department of Human Services (ODHS) Interim Director of Self-Sufficiency Programs Jana McLellan said, “We know that many rely on these additional emergency food benefits to secure enough healthy food for themselves and their families.” Many Oregonians are still struggling to meet their basic requirements, so we encourage them to reach out to our partners at 211, the Oregon Food Bank, and their local Community Action Agency for assistance during this time of year.

Beginning January 11, 2023, current SNAP households will receive emergency allotments. All households who did not get benefits in the initial monthly issuance will receive emergency allotments on January 31, 2023, or February 2, 2023.

These supplementary benefits will be automatically added to SNAP recipients’ EBT cards; no action is required on their part.
