Former Georgia Bulldogs Quarterback JT Daniels is Expected to Move Schools Once More

Quarterback JT Daniels: JT Daniels, formerly of the Georgia football team, has decided to enter the NCAA transfer portal. This is Daniels’ third time going through the transfer process. In 2022, Daniels played for West Virginia. In ten games, he was successful 61% of the time, passing for 2,107 yards and 13 scores. In the final two games, backup Garrett Greene took over for him, and the Mountaineers ended up with a 5-7 record.

Whether for good or ill, JT’s football career will be remembered. He attended Mater Dei High School in California, which is well-known for its football program and has produced notable quarterbacks like Matt Leinart, Matt Barkley, and Bryce Young. He was rated as a five-star prospect and decided to play for USC and coach Clay Helton.

Unfortunately, Daniels’ 2019 ACL tear after a promising freshman year in 2018. Kedon Slovis, the Trojans’ backup quarterback and a transfer himself this year, stepped in for JT and performed admirably. Daniels went through the gateway to Georgia in search of better job prospects. Three-year starter Jake Fromm was leaving for the 2020 NFL Draft, and the Bulldogs needed to find his successor.

It was not until the latter half of the 2020 season that Daniels was given the all-clear to return to action. A remarkable debut for the new Bulldog, as he passed for over 400 yards and led Georgia to a 31-24 victory over Mississippi State. Georgia would go on to win the rest of their 2020 games, including a Peach Bowl comeback victory against Cincinnati. Fans were looking forward to 2021 because of his strong arm and chemistry with Georgia receivers George Pickens and Jermaine Burton.

Nonetheless, everyone is aware of what transpired in the year 2021. Many supporters (including myself) called for Daniels to be reinstated as the starting quarterback numerous times throughout the season, despite the fact that he had started the year as the starter before suffering a lat injury and losing his job to Stetson Bennett. But I think it all turned out okay in the end.

Daniels should still receive interest from other colleges despite his 2020 stat line. He has a strong arm and can rapidly throw the ball downfield. But other coaches could be dubious because he has been benched from starting quarterback positions several times.

Where could JT possibly enroll? For example, Georgia Southern University comes to mind. Clay Helton, who wooed Daniels to USC, now steers the Eagles. Since Kyle Vantrease, their starting quarterback this season, will be leaving at the end of the year, they will also need to find a replacement. Was Helton successful in luring his former quarterback to Statesboro?

Also in the running are the California Golden Bears. After living on the East Coast for the past three years, it’s possible that Daniels may like to return to his hometown of Santa Ana, California. Cal will also need a new starting quarterback as Jack Plummer, their current one, is a fifth-year senior.

The transfer site has effectively become a free agent for college football, with over a thousand players apparently participating. It would appear that Georgia is already actively pursuing portal players for recruitment. Rara Thomas, a wide receiver at Mississippi State, said Wednesday that the University of Georgia has extended an offer to him.

Thomas caught 44 passes for 626 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore. Together with AD Mitchell, Ladd McConkey, and the other returning wideouts for Georgia in 2023, he would form an impressive trio.

Where Daniels, Thomas, and the other players in the transfer portal land will be fascinating to see unfold. Eventually, Kirby Smart will want to strengthen his team’s arsenal, but right now, he must concentrate on defeating Ohio State in the CFP semi-final.
