Free 200 Criminals: Since February 2022, local judges in Multnomah County, which includes Portland, have dismissed the cases of more than 200 defendants due to a lack of available public defenders.
According to the report, the majority of these cases involved allegations of car thefts, people fleeing the police, or illegal possession of firearms.
Some of the cases involved allegations of violent crimes, such as suspects being accused of physically assaulting victims or making threats against them.

State Decision To Free 200 Criminals Rather Extreme
On Tuesday’s episode of “Rush Hour” on NewsNation, David Weinstein, a former state and federal prosecutor who is now in private practice, joined the show to discuss the significance of recent events in Oregon’s legal system.
According to Weinstein, “The solution to this problem that was found here in this case in Portland is rather extreme โ it is one of the first times I’ve heard about cases actually being dismissed.”
Weinstein continued by stating that the problem of insufficient publicly funded and appointed lawyers is a problem all over the country.
According to Weinstein’s explanation to NewsNation, the problem stems from the fact that attorneys working for the public defender’s office or for prosecuting offices are paid a very low salary in comparison to those who are employed in private practices, which makes it difficult to find enough staff.
Weinstein maintains that the response that Oregon has proposed to the problem is rather extreme.

“Their salaries have to be able to be increased in some way, either through public funding or through bonds or through state taxes,” he said. “There has to be a way.”
