Weather Word: If it gets cold enough in the area, you may notice what looks like Dippin’ Dots gathering on the ground. These are the spherical, white pellets of coagulated snow.
That substance is known as graupel. And in the not-too-distant future, graupel precipitation is possible in the Portland metropolitan area.
Graupel is This Week’s Weather Word for Oregon
The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) describes graupel as “soft, tiny pellets generated when supercooled water droplets (at a temperature below 32 degrees Fahrenheit) freeze onto a snow crystal.”

The rimed snow crystal has the potential to develop to a considerable size if the riming is extremely severe, although it will still be smaller than 0.2 inches in diameter. Graupel is also known as snow pellets or soft hail due to the fact that the graupel particles are exceptionally fragile and, in most cases, dissolve when handled.

In the event that precipitation continues through Monday night, it is probable that some areas of the Willamette Valley will be affected by graupel. There is a possibility of snow falling in Portland on Tuesday morning, but it is quite unlikely that any of it will remain on the ground.

On the other hand, if you reside in the West Hills or higher, or even if you’re just traveling through that area, you might run into some snow that lingers around for a little while. This snow may cause some inconvenience at the present time, although it is not a widespread snowstorm.
On Wednesday morning, a Winter Storm Watch will become active for the Cascades, and it is anticipated that it will remain in effect until Thursday afternoon. (Remember that a “watch” indicates that the circumstances are favorable for a particular event, whereas a “warning” indicates that an event is about to take place.
