PPB reported an hour later that they had responded to a shooting that resulted in one person’s death in the Parkrose community close to Northeast Glenn Widing Drive.

Then, sometime before two in the morning, police were called to the area of North Lombard Street and 87th Street to investigate a shooting. A man who was shot is reportedly in critical condition, and a lady is currently in custody in connection with this incident.

“It’s discouraging,” said Lieutenant Ken Duilio of the Focused Intervention Team for the Portland Police Bureau.

“It’s discouraging.” “I’ll say, it’s been pretty consistent since June 2020, what we’ve seen is an increase in the number of shots fired, and an increase in all types of shootings, whether it’s road rage, drug deals went bad, gang shootings, or shootings among the houseless population,” the speaker said.

As a result of these shootings, Portland is getting dangerously close to breaking the record number of killings set in 2021, the vast majority of which were caused by shootings.

According to information provided by the PPB, there have been 88 homicides in the city since the beginning of 2022. In 2021, Portland had a total of 90 homicides, which was the highest number ever recorded in the city and significantly higher than the 20-year average of only 28 homicides per year.

According to Lieutenant Duilio, the Bureau is “severely understaffed” and is implementing an “all-hands-on-deck” strategy in order to respond to the high level of violence.

Despite the fact that “we have officers outside of our unit…that are doing their part on trying to get ahead of this gun violence,” Duilio said that “we’re still in the middle of the middle of a serious staffing shortage.”

He went on to say that although it is upsetting and discouraging, “we are committed to doing the best that we can.”
