On November 8th, Five Vietnamese Americans Won Election To The Oregon House

Five Vietnamese Americans: Hoa Nguyen, the Democratic contender for House District 48, which includes portions of Southeast Portland, Sandy, and Damascus, was finally able to celebrate her victory against John Masterman, the Republican nominee, after Clackamas County concluded counting votes on November 18.

Nguyen won the election by a margin of 2.8% or 657 more votes than Masterman. Her victory makes it a clean sweep for the five Vietnamese Americans (all Democrats) seeking House seats on Nov. 8.

According to a story that was published by WW early on in the year, the election held out the possibility that Oregon would have the nation’s largest group of Vietnamese American lawmakers in the country.

Last week, it happened.

Dr. Hai Pham, a dentist from Hillsboro, Dr. Thuy Tran, an optometrist from Northeast Portland, Hoa Nguyen, an attendance officer for Portland Public Schools, and Daniel Nguyen, a restaurant owner from Lake Oswego, has been elected as the new members for their respective districts. Both Hoa and Daniel Nguyen have political positions in their respective communities. Hoa Nguyen represents the David Douglas School District, and Daniel Nguyen serves on the city council in Lake Oswego.

In January, the four newcomers will join the House Democratic caucus, where they will be joined by state Representative Khanh Pham (D-Southeast Portland), who gained election in 2020.

Khanh Pham is quoted as saying, in reference to the outcomes of the election, “It’s a testament to the tenacity of refugees and their children, as well as an inspiring story of the shifting understanding of what it means to be American.” “I hope that this inspires other potential candidates who hail from historically underrepresented groups to consider running, and I hope that this inspires others to recruit more candidates.”

She noted that it would be a mistake over-generalize the five. According to Khanh Pham, “Each of us comes from very various backgrounds, ranging from the business world to the healthcare industry to education and climate justice.”

“Our election victories illustrate that Vietnamese people (as well as other communities of color) are not a monolith, and they cannot be reduced to a simplified or restricted set of goals. We are comparable to the size, composition, and complexities of any other community.

On November 16, after it had become evident that she had won, Hoa Nguyen released a statement discussing the historical nature of the win for all five candidates. She did this after it had been clear that she had won.

Daniel Nguyen was quoted as saying, “I am so proud to join Representatives Khanh Pham, Dr. Thuy Tran, and Dr. Hai Pham at the state Legislature, making Oregon the state with the largest Vietnamese American representation in the country.” Khanh Pham, Dr. Thuy Tran, and Dr. Hai Pham are all members of the Oregon House of Representatives.

“This is meaningful not only for Vietnamese Oregonians but for all Oregonians because when we have varied representation, we do a better job of solving problems for our whole community,” the statement reads. “This is meaningful not only for Vietnamese Oregonians but for all Oregonians.”
