President Biden discusses Inflation and Oregon’s future in Portland

On Saturday afternoon, around 400 people packed the East Portland Community Center to listen to President Joe Biden speak about how inflation is affecting the price of prescription drugs.

Around 2:30 p.m., President Biden stepped up to the podium. He discussed reducing prices for American households, particularly for seniors.

He pushed for the implementation of his Inflation Reduction Act, which takes effect in January. Millions of Americans will have their health insurance premiums reduced, and the cost of prescription medications will be capped at $2,000 per year out-of-pocket.

Senators Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley, as well as Representative Suzanne Bonamici, were there with President Biden.

The president stated that “drug corporations raised the price of more than 1,200 medications this year alone higher than the rate of inflation.” “Today marks the start of Medicaid’s open enrollment period, so seniors may benefit from the advancements we’ve made that aren’t only for years when they choose plans for next year. Medicare premiums that you pay to cover your medical visits have increased for the first time in more than ten years, but they are about to decline.

His Inflation Reduction Act will also set a $35 limit on out-of-pocket expenses for items like insulin.

Because of the Inflation Reduction Act, seniors will also be able to receive their recommended vaccinations without having to pay a copay, the president declared. “We’re going to keep working for cutting prices of insulin for children and families as well,” he added.

Many of the families in the crowd would benefit from the change.

It will be a big help because several of my aunts are elderly and have to pay for their own meds, according to Twauna Hennessee.

Claire Syrett, who travelled from Eugene to hear the president speak, said, “I have a sister who is on social security disability and receives her health coverage via Medicare, and I think it’s going to make a major impact on her.”

The president specifically mentioned the congressman republicans.

The president said, “Folks, let me tell you something. Every single Democrat in Congress voted for the Inflation Reduction Act, and every single Republican voted against it in every single house and senate. In addition, the congressional Republicans are now telling us that repealing the IRA is their top priority if they win.

For some Oregonians like Syrett, this is a worry. She stated, “I pray we don’t see that happen. For the republicans to be so cold-hearted as to not see the true impacts this has on individuals and their everyday lives is quite unsettling.

Biden used the occasion to emphasise how he views the working class.

“I’m a guy who bubbles up. According to the president, “the middle class established this country, and unions developed the middle class. When the middle class does well, the working-class folks have a route up, and the wealthiest do just fine.

He gave many people newfound optimism.

“He is sincere. He seems to sincerely care about people, particularly the working class, according to Hennessee.

“Right now, things are terrifying, and it’s easy to lose hope, so I really appreciate that he had that to say to us,” Syrett continued.

I’ve never been more positive in my life, and we just have to remember who in God’s name we are. This is the United States of America.

Biden’s next visit is Delaware, where he will remain for the remainder of the weekend.
