In order to be ready for their next conference season, the College of the Redwoods women played the first of two difficult games in Oregon on Wednesday.
The Corsairs start conference play late next week and will face formidable opponents Butte and Feather River right away.
In light of this, head coach Petra Lorenzi lined up two challenging pre-conference contests in Oregon for this week and the following week. One of these contests was on Wednesday at Southwestern Oregon, when they were defeated in straight sets, 25-18, 25-19, 25-19.
Lorenzi stated, “We lost in three, but it was a wonderful game for us. We have come up here to help ourselves get ready for the conference.
Against the powerful SWOCC hitters, the CR women’s defense continued to stand out, and they gained more self-assurance.
The head coach asserted, “I think our defense tonight will give them the confidence they can dig a hitter no matter how hard they come at us.
Perla Ceballos added 10 digs while adjusting to a new defensive position, and Heaven Fults added 12 digs and three aces on the day.
Lorenzi praised Ceballos for her “very nice job playing disciplined defense.” Teammate Abby Costello-Anderson led the team in kills with six, while teammates Zoe Zerlang and Lily LaRue both contributed four and continued to wow their coach with their middle-court play.
Mia Holcomb, who is skilled, performed admirably as a setter as well. Mia is working extremely hard, added Lorenzi. She is most likely the best setter CR has seen in a long time.
Prior to starting the Golden Valley Conference in Butte on Friday of the following week, the Corsairs (4-8) will travel to Oregon once more on Monday to play Umpqua in what should be another difficult contest.
