The Oregon State Hospital could be hit with a punishment of $54,000 for failing to properly investigate injuries that occurred on the job.
According to Oregon Public Broadcasting, the citation that was brought by the state’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration alleges that between January 2021 and June 2022, the hospital failed to investigate every instance in which a worker suffered an injury or illness that caused them to miss work as a result of the absence from work. According to the citation, the hospital did not investigate potential means to safeguard against the occurrence of future injuries and illnesses.
People who have been charged with crimes but who first require treatment for mental health issues before their cases can move forward are typically housed at the state hospital, which is a secure psychiatric facility. In recent years, the organization has had trouble admitting patients within the statutory time frame of seven days after being ordered to provide treatment for someone.
Between January 2021 and June 2022, the Oregon State Hospital was issued a fine in the amount of $54,000 for failing to investigate each and every occupational injury.
According to the citation, during the course of the previous year, the hospital kept track of more than 300 cases that caused thousands of hours of lost productivity. According to Oregon OSHA, over forty percent of the cases of injury and illness in 2022 were the result of workplace violence; however, the majority of these occurrences were not investigated.
Throughout the course of the pandemic, staffing has been a constant challenge at the Oregon State Hospital, as it has been at other institutions. The National Guard has been requested to provide assistance on a few occasions.
A spokeswoman for the hospital, who asked not to be identified, stated that they intend to pay the fine and are working to address the issues.
