Ahead Of November’s Election, Oregon’s Secretary Of State Urged Citizens To Register To Vote

Secretary of State Shemia Fagan hosted a celebration at the Multnomah County Library in Southeast Portland on Tuesday to commemorate National Voter Registration Day, which is less than two months away.

Oregonians may simply do that at Oregonvotes.gov, according to Fagan. Simply continuing, updating registration, or checking registration takes less than 90 seconds.

More than 15,000 Oregonians registered to vote in the past month, according to Fagan’s website. In addition, Fagan said, she has been visiting counties around the state and talking with clerks about the recent spike in requests for public information.

A few people are making frequent, extremely technical requests, according to Fagan. “Typically fueled by election-related conspiracies concerning 2020.”

According to Fagan, the system has been greatly strained by these demands, but there is a plan to lessen the load.

In order to relieve the county clerks of this load, “we’re working with the legislature to request a public records officer within the Secretary of State’s office (who) they can submit those election-related requests to,” Fagan said.

Fagan expressed her gratitude to lawmakers for passing the bipartisan election worker safety measure during the previous session.

We did receive threats, primarily in Jackson County but also elsewhere in the state, Fagan continued. “By making it illegal to harass or intimidate election workers in Oregon.”

Everyone should be reminded that the elections in Oregon are secure, according to Fagan. The clerks have received training in forensic handwriting analysis, and each and every envelope’s signature is verified.
