After spending the late hours of Saturday night barricaded inside his home, an armed 47-year-old man eventually surrendered to the Hillsboro police.
Hillsboro police said the incident began with a report of domestic violence, in which a man who was later identified as Gary D. Stevens threatened his spouse with a firearm and brandished it in front of them.
After then, Stevens is said to have barricaded himself inside the residence in the neighborhood of NE 43rd and Lincoln. According to the authorities, the crisis negotiation team arrived at the site and was successful in convincing Stevens to surrender.
He was arrested on several charges related to domestic violence, including unlawful use of a weapon, strangling, harassment, menacing, and breaking a release agreement. He was taken into the Washington County Jail.
There is currently a case filed against Stevens for domestic violence that dates back to the beginning of August 2022. There were already felony charges pending against him for witness tampering and strangling, in addition to a criminal charge for harassment.
During the incident that occurred on Saturday night, roads in the area were shut down.
