On Wednesday, August 10, 2022, Clifford E. Sanford, 89, of Hillsboro passed away at HSHS St. John’s Hospital in Springfield.

On Saturday, August 13, Mr. Sanford was buried in Hillsboro’s St. Agnes Cemetery. The family received assistance from Hillsboro’s Bass Patton Dean Funeral Home with the arrangements.

Robert and Mary Jane (Boyd) Sanford welcomed a son named Mr. Sanford into the world on June 29, 1933, in Schram City. In 1958, he wed Gloria Scariot of Kortkamp.

Mr. Sanford went to Hillsboro High School after Schram City School. He honorably served his country aboard the U.S.S. Whiteside, AKA-90, from 1952 to 1956 as a Korean War veteran. He started working for the Decatur-based Caterpillar Tractor Company in 1957 and retired in 1992.

Mr. Sanford belonged to the Korean War Veterans Association, the U.S.S. Whiteside Association of Korean War Veterans, and Taylor Springs’ Kershaw Harmer V.F.W. Post #1306. He liked going to their reunions all around the country. On July 27, 1995, he left for Washington, D.C., to attend the unveiling of the Korean War Memorial Monument.

Mr. Sanford leaves behind his wife, son Ron, daughter Rhonda (who is engaged to Gene Knisley), brother Earl, and sister Mae Smoot.

His parents, brothers Robert and George, and three siblings who passed away as infants preceded him in death.
