The Emeralds defeat the Hillsboro Hops at home 5-4 to extend their winning streak.
At P.K. Park, Nick Swiney started the game on the mound. In his first two innings, he allowed two hits, four runs, five walks, and three strikeouts. Tonight, Nick Morreale was given the victory after pitching one inning while only allowing one hit and striking out one.
In the first inning, Casey Schmidt’s RBI ground-ball single allowed Vaun Brown to score, making Eugene the first team to score. Hillsboro got on the board in the second inning when center fielder Wilderd Patino scored for the Hops after designated hitter Danny Oriente grounded out to third.

No Hillsboro defenders moved in response to Luis Toribio’s home run in the bottom of the second inning. Eugene now leads 2-1.
The Hops came back to tie the game one inning later, so the lead didn’t stay long. Two runners scored when third baseman Deyvision De Los Santos doubled on a ground ball to left field. In response to Oriente’s sacrifice fly to right field, De Los Santos scored.
The Emeralds owned the remainder of the evening. In the fourth inning, Robert Emery doubled on a fly ball to center field, cutting the Hops’ advantage to one.
Riley Mahan launched a sacrifice fly to left field in the bottom of the sixth, and Patrick Bailey scored to tie the score.
In the seventh inning, the fifth and game-winning run was scored. Vaun Brown was brought in after Jairo Pomares hit on a fly ball to right field.
Tomorrow at 6:35 for game two of the series, the Emeralds will try to make it five straight victories. Gates will open at 5:30 for a beachball giveaway, and the game will begin at 6:35. MiLB.TV will offer live streaming of the game.
