Ashley Forest Road Shooting Suspect Charged With Murder After Victim Dies (Latest News)

Due to the death of the gunshot victim, the suspect in a fatal attack on Ashley Forest Road in Chapel Hill is now being accused of murder in addition to previous charges.

Following the passing of Elyjah Smith, 27-year-old Kemonnie Drequan Eason has been charged with first-degree murder, according to a press statement from the Chapel Hill Police Department. Eason, a resident of Charlotte, was taken into custody by law enforcement on Friday, July 15.

According to Chapel Hill Police, the incident took place on July 11 at 9 p.m., when officers responded to a complaint at the 100 block of Ashley Forest Road, close to the Tyler Creek area and a townhome complex. Police claim that a few days later, detectives identify Eason as a suspect.

Eason is accused of first-degree murder as well as other crimes like shooting into an occupied building, brandishing a pistol during an attack, having a gun in their possession while a felon, and stealing a car. He was initially detained at the Wake County Detention Center without bond, according to Chapel Hill Police, but is now in Orange County’s detention facility.

According to the police report from July 15, the department’s investigation is still ongoing and there is no new information at this time.
