Shockers Rock Hillsboro, 16-1

The Shockersโ€™ bats barreled a lot of baseballs, their two pitchers delivered the added heat, and Post 142 had its way with host Hillsboro. Thatโ€™s because, on Tuesday evening at Hillsboroโ€™s Shaffer Park, the Shockers simply destroyed Post 129 by a count of 16-1 โ€”in an SCOL American Legion Baseball match and underneath a blistering sun.

Both teams were knotted 1-1 with a third-inning score apiece, but the Waverly-based unit erupted from there โ€”amassing the final 15 runs, with five in the fourth followed by a pair in the fifth and the remainder in the sixth. Because of the 10-run mercy rule, they only used eight of their 16 remaining hitters in the last inning, which ended up being the game’s deciding inning.

With their win over Portsmouth Post 23 on Wednesday night, the Shockers improved to 5-3 on the season. Alex Boles and Roger Woodruff each pitched three innings for the Shockers, with Boles earning the victory despite allowing one unearned run on one hit and three walks while striking out four batters.

Woodruff went the last three for two fourth-inning walks and three sixth-inning singles which loaded the bases, but he struck out seven โ€”including for all three outs in the fifth and sixth. Boles faced 14 batters and Woodruff 13, retiring the side in order in the fifth inning with a 1-2-3 symphonic score. Boles gave up a two-out single and a walk in the first, but stranded runners at first and second โ€”as Hillsboro had the second-stanza leadoff hitter reach base on an error.

Boles left him at second when he stole a base, as the hosts combined a one-out walk and another Shocker error for their third-frame unearned run. Offensively, Waverly went off for 14 hits โ€”scoring first in the third when Peyton Harris had a single, Hunter Edwards reached on an E-1, and Jase Hurd had an RBI single.

Including an RBI single in the fourth and a bases-clearing, three-run double in the sixth, Zane Trace’s Ben Nichols had a game-high four hits to lead the Shockers’ offensive charge.

Nichols scored the 16th and final Shocker point โ€”on Weston Roopโ€™s RBI-double that followed his showcase at-bat. Dax Estep had three RBI and two hits to go along with L.T. Jordan’s two. Woodruff, Hurd, and Zane Traceโ€™s Tre Edler added songs as well. Tra Swayne of Piketon scored a game-high three runs โ€”on two walks and ultimately a hit by a pitch.
