Though initially praised, the standalone episodes have been met with a more mixed reception as the season has progressed. Critics have pointed to the abrupt changes in settings, the anthological nature of each episode, and the absence of the main cast in any of the standalone episodes as reasons for their disapproval. FX renewed the series for a fourth and final season in August 2019, two and a half years before the season premiered.
