Another sportsman comes out in defense of Novak Djokovic

Australian courts granted Novak Djokovic the right to enter the country and compete in the Australian Open after the Serb filed an appeal.

Federal Judge Anthony Kelly called the country’s decision to bar the tennis player “irrational.”

The judge on Monday ordered that Djokovic be released within 30 minutes and that his passport and other personal documents be returned to him.

Djokovic had been detained in Australia since the morning of Thursday 6th. He arrived in the country the day before, but was stopped at the airport after presenting a certificate of exemption from vaccination, which was not recognized as valid by the authorities.

The tennis player’s lawyers present documents (a PCR test) that would prove that he tested positive for covid-19 on December 16, a situation that, according to the defense, would give permission to enter Australia without being vaccinated.

Australian government lawyer Christopher Tran, however, said that even with the decision, the tennis player could be prevented from entering the country. The Australian Open starts on the 17th.

According to him, the Minister of Immigration, Citizenship, Immigrant Services and Multicultural Relations, Alex Hawke, can use his special powers to cancel the visa and deport Djokovic.
